Identification of flat head "6" engines

How can tell what engines I'm interested in buying? The one is out of a 1960 dodge 2wd pick up with a flat head and 3 speed trans. The other is out of a '49 desoto and the guy isn't sure what size they are. I would like to know what to tell the guy to look for so I know what size they are. They are 300 miles away so I have to explain to him by phone. Thanks Guys, PaRob
