You can check the VIN # to see what engine came in the truck. A Chilton's manual should have the details. Info about distributor locat1on and SB vs. BB is correct. If SB, look at the harmonic balancer. If it is symmetrical then it would be a 318. If the harmonic balancer has an a-symetrical shaped ring cast onto the front of it then you have a 360. As I remember, the crank pulley recesses into the ring I am talking about. The crank pulley bolts to a flush surface on the 318 harmonic balancer. Also, most 318's and 360's have the displacement indicated as the last three digits of the casting number on the side of the block. Very easy to see from underneath on a clean engine.

If a BB, there is a smooth flat surfaced "hump" cast into the block just to the right (as you face the engine) of the distributor on a 440. This is absent on a 383.
