318 Dodge questions

Hey all,
I just had given to me free a 73 Dodge pickup. Not 4x4 but has potential. Its really clean and straight, and I got it running and it runs GREAT! I was wondering how to tell what motor is in it, I think its a 318 but the block seems kinda wide. Its also pretty powerful. Also, when you go to crank it over, it doesnt fire untill you release the key, then it catches on or sputters. I ran a direct wire (on a switch) from the battery to the coil to try when starting. It didnt seem to help. Any ideas what could be the problem? Thanks very much!
