An old friend of mine had their farm set up for 32VDC with a home made wind generator built from surplus WWII airplane parts. They had a bunch of 32V power tools like a skill saw, a hand drill, and I think an angle grinder. The lathe and drill press in the shop were also run with 32V motors before the power lines came.
Cliff and his brother also built a 32VDC to 110VAC "converter" from a 32V motor, and a home brewed 110AC alternator, so that their kids could watch the first TV broadcasts that started Christmas in 1957. The power lines didn't make it out to their area until a couple of years later.

Years ago I picked up most of a factory built 110VDC "WindCharger" system from a farm estate sale. It had an 11 foot diameter, 4 bladed wind generator, with a very thirsty V4 Onan powered standby generator for backup. There had been a large 110VDC battery bank in the basement of the generator shack, but it had been sold for scrap years before. They still had the huge 4 legged tower for the wind generator, but wouldn't sell it because they still used it for an antenna.

Around here, the 32volt systems were much more common because of the lower price of the battery bank. I would also think there might have been some safety concerns, as 110v is potentially lethal compared to 32V.
