Dashboard comes from horse-drawn buggy days. It was a wood panel fitted in front of the driver to stop mud and horse crap getting on the driver. Glovebox and running boards from same. The running board was a longer plank on the side instead of the steps for teamsters etc to get back on board while the buggy/wagon/dray was moving - like after you got through a bog or slow and difficult section.
