Can you get to the inside of the differential? What if you put a snap ring or spring clip groove just inside the face of the spider gear so that it retains the shaft similar to a C-clip type axle like a 10 bolt or Ford 8.8. You could then control how much engagement the cap had. Problem with that is now you have to pull the cover to remove the axle shafts.
