But the MU winches have a small brake pad that engages the side of the drum when the drum is not engaged. This stops the drum from moving but allows you unspool it without ending up with a rats nest.

I have seen too many PW bent winch mounts and frames because someone left it engaged and they or someone else engaged the PTO causing major destruction.
