Simpler: More splines means shallower cut into shaft.

And production cost is lots lower for that stronger product- Fine splines are swaged into the shaft and coupling/gear. One press operation, and wah-la, splines all the way around are done. Vs a milling machine making each slot individually- ten splines, ten operations.

Progress in engineering.

But the pic above is a workmanship problem- no lock washers, no locktight, and/or not enough torque.

OT, I had a Pinto come in once with a locked up motor. I sold him a rebuild, and as I disassembled it, found that a bolt inside the bell housing to the tranny had backed out, until it locked the torque converter. And bent. Just like the Dana 70.
