REAL vises are made from malleable iron, not cast.
I try to do my heavy abuse in the Wilton. But patternmaker's vises are so universal, what with 3-4 axis tilts and swivels, they are very handy for work positioning for welding. The unit in question is only gray cast iron, OK for wood. But had been repaired by a previous owner too, and was a bit crooked. It was that crookedness that got me in trouble this time. It's better now.
