If you have to wait to get it to shift into gear, it isn't right and needs to be fixed. That isn't normal, it's either a bad pump, or dirty valve body or neglect of service.
My 93 goes right into gear no matter how long it sits, with 200,000 miles.
The only diesel years that had a 727/36RH was 89-91, 91.5-93 were 518/46RH all non-lockup.
Biggest problems with the autos against a 5.9 is neglect.
Normal driving requires oil changes at 20-30,000 miles, heavy towing should be every 10,000 miles and bands need to be adjusted every oil change.
Also, not running ATF+4 will cause excessive wear and converter problems too.
The 47RH tranny in the 94-95 and 47RE in 96-up were better and heavier duty, but IMO the rest of truck was junk compared to the 1st Generation.
