I probably should not mention it, and I really hate to do so, but I had better confess. I figure out all my compound cuts on rafter framing before hand in 3D computer programs - Solidworks or Autodesk Inventor.

I did this the first time for a hip porch roof for my house in 2002. There had never been a roof there before and the wall I was building against was not exactly plumb. I laid it all out 3D in Solidworks to 1/32" precision, marked and cut all the rafters to individual drawings produced from the 3D models, and nailed it together. Fit right the first time, no recuts, minimized waste, and it was quick.

Of course, I learned absolutely nothing about a framing square in the process. I did set the step ladder on the flatbed of my '51 B3PW, backed up to the porch. THAT has to account for something! ;^)
