I would love to know the proper way to use those old-fashioned rafter squares with all the tables stamped on the side of them. I know they will show you how to cut compound angles correctly the first time, like for a hipped roof or where a dormer intersects with another roof, but my carpentry is so amateur that I just eyeball it and then futz with two pieces until I get the ends to match right, and they use them as patterns for the rest. This is obviously a lousy way to build houses, and I know the True and Correct answer is somewhere in those cryptic rafter square tables. Same thing goes with cutting compound angles on crown molding using a chop saw.
