I was given a two volume set of books about 40 years ago. They were were written in 1907 by William Radford. The Steel Square and It's Usage. With the carpenter's steel square, it's not only possible to build a square or rectangular house, cut all the rafters for any type of roof, layout the stairs from one level to the next, but you can also build a hexagonal, octagonal or whatever number of sides to a house, and the necessary rafters. You can also calculate the distance across a body of water or the height of a tree, among many other things.
I venture to say most carpenters today, if they even own a square, limit it's usage to marking a line across a wide board.
