Probably not this simple, but double-check that you have the polarity set right if it's the kind that can do argon or flux-core. I'd been cussing my harbor freight wire-feed welder recently because I couldn't get it to do a half-decent weld like it used to do and then I realized I had swapped the wires inside when I did some flux-core welding out in the boonies a while back (didn't want to bring the gas bottle) and I hadn't changed it back. Don't know why it makes a difference but it sure does.
