If it really is a 6V electronic tach, I would be wary of hooking it up to a 12V system unless I traced out the schematic and looked up the specs of the semiconductors first. Anything that old probably used germanium transistors and diodes and might not be able to take higher voltage. May well be positive ground too. It would be real easy to fry it before you even knew anything was wrong. But 30 years old isn't very old, and odds are it's a 12 volt tach.
