That old reg was only a voltage coil inside to one set of points. No cut-out relay, no amp control. Plus a resistor on the bottom,to get 5v to the field.

Except generators have fields, alts have commutator? Rotor? See, one of the advantages of alts is that the field spins, so brushes only need to handle that lower current. And the brushes are on smooth slip rings, contacting all the time. Generator brushes lack diodes, so only take the positive side of an out put, and waste the negative side by letting the armature turn past the brushes before the current reverses. There goes half the output of those huge dynamos.
