I didn't want a bunch of layers of paint so Paint shop suggested epoxy primer to top coat.

I smoothed it with 80 grit, then 150 grit with a soft pad on a die grinder. Lightly sandblasted to clean. Epoxy primer and let dry for less than 24 hours. Sprayed Acrylic Urethane and it's as smooth as glass. Worked so well I did a lot of the suspension parts the same way, including the axles.

No sanding of the primer saved a step and makes for a more durable finish because of fewer layers.
