That's what makes the rivets so strong and hold so much. Any misalignment or voids are filled up when they are crushed. I had also been told that if the holes are punched, they purposely put the pieces with the holes opposite of each other. This allows the "kerf" of the punched hole to create even more of a lock when squeezed together.

Stairstep drilling to paper thin edges allows the rivet sides to come in when you drive it out. I put a piece of tape around the drills so I know how far to drill in. This keeps you from breaking through.
