If you have a pre 1955 or so Cat D2 or D4 and you want to change it to electric start, you will have to drill a starter and hole in the raised area located on the bell housing below the Pony motor. I'm not an expert by any means, but around that year date or so, Cat started drilling the hole in all bellhousings to convert to direct electric if the owner wanted to later on. A plate was installed to cover the hole on all pony motor equipped Tractors. As far as parts for the pony are concerned you can still get parts, but as I said before in an earlier post, they are expensive with the crankshaft bearings being one of the most expensive of the bunch. Cat dealer parts will be the most $ as usual with the aftermarket parts houses being more reasonable as far as $ are concerned. IMHO, "Joe McGee and Rube Goldberg " pony set ups just don't cut it. In all fairness though, if you don't have a lot of $ to spend and you need to get the Cat working I can see going that route.
