Just a quick update on my rebuilt NP420. It turns out the knocking sound was from the PTO. I have removed the PTO from the tranny to investigate further. Without the PTO, the tranny runs perfect and is very quiet.

I tried multiple gasket combinations without success. I had already replaced the bearings/seals in the PTO. Now I'll take it apart again and inspect the shafts.
