In my boat, Batt. #1 starts the outboard engine, and is also charged by the engine through a pair of very heavy cables. Batt. #2 runs an electric trolling motor and is not charged by the engine.
I am looking for a heavy duty switch that would allow me to switch between the starting battery and the trolling battery.
I imagine the heavy cables that now connect batt #1 to the engine would instead go to the main lug on the switch (double throw?). The switch would allow either battery to receive a charge, but not at the same time, as well as to be used to start the engine.
The biggest problem is finding a switch that has connector lugs big enough for the heavy cable (approx.1/2" diameter)
And....would this even work?
I know there are marine application switches available, but the only ones I have been able to find require getting into the charging system of the outboard engine. This seems like it would be much simpler, if it will work.
Thanks.
