When liquid is heated it expands. If you aren't boiling (212 degrees) you are only building pressure. If the pressure exceeds 5 psi, the cap vents the excess pressure.

I suggest you put a higher pressure cap on, or use an expansion tank. I just bought one in kit form for $8 at AutoZone.
