I have a neighbor who has an old hand dug well on their farm with a concrete platform over the top. They still have the old hand pump in place as well as the round hole off to one side and some of the supporting structure that operated the food cooler. It operated by a hand crank and cables to lower a lazy-susan type of container into the well (above the water line) to keep milk and butter cool. In the middle of summer, crank the unit up out of the well, open the door, and you had nice cool butter - only a short walk out the kitchen door.

This is the second one of these I have seen locally. I don't know what company made them. The owners of the property would like to find the antique pieces to put it back together. It was probably made in the late 1800's or early 1900's. I can find no photos, ads, or information on the internet.

It is kind of the Power-Wagon of refrigerators.

Anyone seen one of these or have any photos?

Thanks,
Junior
