I used Ash for my new truck bed. The Ash is very light colored; factory bed wood was painted black and I couldnt bring myself to do it.. I ended up using a black stain, brushed on & quickly wiped off. It gave the wood a nice gray weathered look. Try it on a piece of scrap Ash or similar colored wood.
