Maybe make a large washer that's a neat fit around the valve? Back in the day (at least here in Oz) the rubber valve stems for cars were quite large diameter, then in late '50's they started to introduce small diameter valve stems, so they came up with a plastic adapter sleeve that fit the small stem to the large hole, no reason you couldn't do similar.
