I quit using locally grown beams years ago, particularly larch beams. I started buying Doug Fir beams from the coast after having to replace the local grown ones because of twisting. As you know the coast trees are at least twice as big as most of our trees around here, allowing them to saw from the heart wood.
Another problem I have had with local trees is pitch running out. I had a post in a bridgeway inside a big house that weeped pitch for 6 months. The posts and beams were mortised and tenoned, so it would have taken longer to replace it than it took to build the bridge.
I think if anything, these logs would make some beautiful T&G 1x4 and 1x6 flooring.
