A good friend was an executive for Dana, 50s-70s. He told that they made frames from straight pieces of steel, say 8" x 3/16 by 16 feet. They went into a big press on edge, and were bent into the drop center shape. Then laid flat and flanges bent on another press. Two hits to turn a straight strip into a convoluted C shaped frame rail. Huge tonnage needed, but he didn't recall the number.
