Had a VW once that popped a valve head off in a cylinder! Going about 65 MPHs on the freeway in California I made the comment to myself boy engine is running great. Then a little later I head a loud bang in the engine. I shoved the clutch in instantly and the engine was running like crap. Shut it off and coasted to the side. I popped the hood open and found a spark plug laying out of it hole with the plug wire still attached. When I pulled the head off at a gas station I found a valve head had broke off turned sideways and knocked the plug out of the head!! I was lucky cause it did not damage the piston much just the head. Put a new one on in the parking lot and headed home for another 800 miles with out a problem. I had a Baja Kit on the back end so the head was easy to remove leaving the engine in the VW. Had a rod go in about the same area on a slant six Dodge engine and found a old wrecking yard that a old guy said he could turn the journal while the engine was still in the truck. He charged me $20.00 to do it and $5.00 for a used rod and a new rod bearing if I did all the work and I headed off back the Washington State. A electric motor turned my back tire around and while in gear it turned the crank while the grinding tool ground a new surface on the crank. I lucked out cause a slant six engines oil pan was open enough to bolt to the pan holes and go up inside the engine.
