I had something similar happen with my old Scout. I had a tough time getting it started one spring. It coughed and hacked at idle until I stomped on the pedal. There was a loud pop-smack and then it idled fine.
There was a mouse nest in the tail pipe. The smack was from it hitting the garage wall at speed.
I found a nest in the air breather of my M37 (V8) that got stuck in the filter after it died on the road.
That was messy. But at least the filter worked..
