Try a pair of CR2 3V 850ma/hr battery stacked they should fit lengthwise in a D cell space however they are smaller diameter so you may want to wrap in cardboard, They will be in series providing 6 volt output. The old 6V D size went out with the old rotary dial telephones and radio A-B batteries years ago!
