My expirences on the Ford 300 six are this: Most can be found with more than 200K miles still running great, the 300 six, when in a light truck like a 1/2 ton or a 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive will deliver exceptional fuel economy. Believe it or not, the older Carb'd 300 sixes actually deliver BETTER Fuel economy then the newer EFI engines! The worst milage i have got from a 300 six was 13.4. That was in a '82 F-250 HD 4X4. That was a work truck and had about 1,500 lbs of tools and equipment being lugged around...It also had 4.10 gears. The best milage I pulled from a 300 six was 22 in a '85 F-150 with a 4 speed OD and 3.00 gears. Most of the 300 six engines I have run average 19 MPG. I have found them to have very good pulling ability, and they are fairly reliable. The are kinda tuff to crank up on a cold winter morning tho. They also take for ever to warm up, but then again, they take heat well too. They just keep on ticken...Perhaps they are the best engine made by Ford. As far as I see it, the only really good engine Ford ever made...

The Chevy 292 is a good engine as well...they have a slight economy edge over the 300, and they have tons of low end torque due to such a long stroke. The Chevy 250 lacks alot in torque but can rev high and gets great milage.

The 258 AMC six was orgionally designed by GM! THe GM inline six HEI will fit into a AMC 258 six. Some distributor gear modification is necessary. This six suffers from two down falls, lack of Cubic inches and chain drive timing...
