David,

Your 4 barrel carburetor will probably have smaller primaries than what your 2 barrel did. If you have mechanical advance for the secondaries as opposed to vacuum, AND most importantly if you are able to keep your foot out of it, you might gain a little on the economy end of things. I know you're asking about Mopar but as I recall the 351 Ford Clevelands had four barrel heads and two barrel heads. There's no sense pushing all that extra gas down there if the engine can't breathe and burn it properly. Also when addressing breathing you need to look at the other end of the system and that's the exhaust. Personally at a minimum I'd opt for dual exhaust. Consider recurving the distributor as well. Fortunately we don't have to worry about all the smog control up here in the interior of Alaska, but there still is a lot you can do to breathe a little life into your engine. It's been my experience that when we upgrade to a 4 bbl what we're really looking for is power, not economy. If economy was a priority we'd all be driving little imports. So all in all you will probably drop a few miles to the gallon. You know when that other truck tries to pass you, you aren't going to be able to resist demonstrating your fire breathing 318! Good luck and save your nickels for the gas pump.
