Don't bang it much at all. Glass you can replace, but you don't want to dent or bend the frame, it pretty thin, and probably more so with rust. How about a drill with a stone or a 3" grinding disk, maybe you can get a better angle. Or better yet a die or angle grinder? Don't grind too far and put a bigger hole in the frame.
