Electrical current flows from the negative terminal,
through the load, and on to the positive terminal.
Most loads, as indicated previously, don't care which
way the current flows. A light bulb, for instance,
is just a resistor and has no polarity. Other loads
such as car radios, cassette players, some gauges,
the alternator, CBs, etc. do need to be run with
a negative ground. The British were the most stubborn
about changing from a positive ground, but finally
succumbed. Apparently you get more corrosion with
a positive ground system. Also don't forget that
if you ever need a jump, nobody's going to be able
to help you. All around, you are going to be better
off changing to a negative ground system. To make your
ammeter read correctly, just reverse the wires leading
into it.
