It's probably a WW2 1/2 or 3/4 ton WC series; since it's short it's probably a weapons carrier. The 3/4 tons are 98" wheelbase, the 1/2 tons are a little longer. They both had a 1-speed transfer case: considerably thinner than the 2-speed. Most of the 3/4 tons (not all) had 9.625" ring gears with welded-on inspection covers; the 1/2 tons have 8.75" ring gears with bolted-on covers. An M37 (postwar, built 50-68) has a 114" wheelbase, exactly 12" shorter than the civilian PWs; the hood opens conventionally, instead of the gullwing design of the PWs and WCs. M37s all have 2-speed T-cases and the newer type axles. Also, the WW2 rigs have a centered rear axle, and the postwar vehicles have an offset rear diff.
Hope this helps you figure it out.
