Just a couple of "ideas" for the overdrive concept:
How about an OD from one of the late50's early 60's Studebakers etc. that had one mounted behind the 3speed transmission? They were cable/lever operated, and could(?) be put behind the transfer case for OD in 2wheel-Hi.
Has anyone ever thought of using a Lenco? (this is a modular, planetary, racing transmission that we used to run in drag racing.) They are available in almost any ratio, Can handle the torque, and are "clutchless shifting" [even under full load]. (I'm Really suprised that the "Hardcore" 4wheelers/rock-crawlers haven't started using these yet.)
There is a type of 2speed circle track transmission (a" Doug Nash" I believe) that uses standard Quick Change gears to provide Over/underdrive in many ratios. This is a Very Compact, strong unit, and the Change gears are readily available at reasonable cost.
{The reason I mention these racing trannies is that I have seen some interesting applications of them, and that Sometimes, racers will sell off stuff fairly reasonable when they quit, or want the latest "Trick Part". Also, many of them have lots of "no longer competitive" set ups around that may work fine for noncompetitive applications }
How about a "2 speed rearend" centre section grafted into or replacing the original rear dif? Dana/Spicer made a 2 Speed version of the 70 series axle, which could work out real well in a later model PW. Again, this would only be OD in 2Hi, but might be as easy as just changing the axle tubes.
Just a few thoughts from my twisted mind. Good Luck J.V.L.
