I'm no expert either, but I have replace a few clutches
in my time. Most of them require that the throwout bearing
be lightly touching the "fingers" on the pressure plate
when the clutch is engaged (pedal out). I have only
seen one setup where there is a spring to pull the
fork back out when the pedal is let out. Usually the
fingers on the pressure plate are enough to return to
normal position. I really don't remember ever worrying
about anything other than trying to get the pedal to where
it starts to engage the clutch fairly soon (about 1 inch)
and then adjusting things until the clutch fully releases
allowing smooth shifting. If the clutch is not fully
releasing, you should be able to hear a sandpaper type
noise when you step on the pedal. This would cause the
disk to wear prematurely. This is followed shortly by
the truck still moving when you have the pedal down. A most
disconcerting feeling I might add. If on the other hand
the clutch does not fully engage when you let the pedal
out, I think you would still hear some sort of noise and
some slippage, especially when going uphill. You should
not be able to turn the disk when the pedal is out. It should
be smashed flat between the pressure plate and the
flywheel. Hope this helps.
