My '51 M37 has a pair of 12 volt batteries,
but still utilizes the 24 volt starter and
generator. The ignition, electic fuel pump
and lights are all 12 volts now. 12 volts is
taken from the second of the 2 12 volt batteries.

I had problems until I put two good 12 volt
batteries in the truck. I've run it all
this season, probably 200 miles so far, with
not problems.

But, eventually it will overcharge the 1st battery
and undercharge the second. I put a digital volt
meter on each battery individually with the
engine running. The 1st battery sees about
18 volts, the second about 8 volts.

Switching batteries periodically would obviously
help, but so far, I haven't touched them this
season.

For what it's worth.
