The four M56's I've seen over the years were all short wheelbase models. It was my understanding that the M56 was simply an M37 without the bed. It could then be easily modified for "wrecker", "bomb service", or any other situation that called for a tough truck.( I am aware of the R2 crash trucks.) The ones I saw were all rural fire dept trucks with a custom "bed". They were NOT the long wheel base version. I have seen the LWB M37 and owned the LWB Maintainence V41.
