i went nuts with a similar issue. changed everything in an attempt to find answer to similar symptoms. answer- get your distributor rebuilt. my dist had worn bushing and no matter how perfect you time it, no matter how fresh the carb is, you will not get a good result. john bizal rebuilt my dist and installed new points and set it up for me. plug and play. he also rebuilt my carb. these engine run so nicely if you go through the steps.
