If I understand correctly what I read in old sales literature, the setup on that truck is actually commonly described as a "pole derrick." It differs slightly from a true A-frame in that the A-frame is distributing the load between two legs while the pole derrick has one "pole" doing virtually all the work by being in compression from the load and directing it mostly to the passenger side frame.

I think you are correct in that the member attaching to pad eye at the drivers side of the frame is a stabilizer or prop. I believe the member going to the pad eye above the passenger fender (and braced to the frame rail below) is a telescopic prop who's only responsibility is to keep the main "pole" from folding rearward over the truck. This appeared to be useful when the main pole was set vertical when placing power poles in pre drilled holes in the ground. I don't believe it was ever designed to be in tension and should never take any of the load and would be in compression only with the main pole set vertical.

I think the bulk of the load is actually being taken by the guy wire that travels from the cat head back to the vertical member between the cab and the utility box.
