Dodge was filling Ram diesels with 5% biodiesel at the factory. One of the reasons for adding the biodiesel was for added lubricity. When they closed the St. Louis plant and moved production exclusively to Mexico, I believe they had problems finding biodiesel for a while. I'm not sure if Fiat has maintained the factory fill program, but they approve 20% biodiesel in all their diesels, as does Cummins.

I change my fuel filter every October. That is overkill, but it's nice going into winter with a new filter, and I've never had a problem.

Diesel Emission Fluid (DEF) is not for the particulate filter, but for the NOx reducing catalyst downstream of the filter.

Biodiesel will reduce the soot going into the filter and therefore extend the period between regeneration. The particles from biodiesel have also been observed to burn off the filter at a lower temperature, making regeneration a little easier.

EPA registered Additives should not adversely effect any of the operation. We test biodiesel blends to ensure engine durability and emission controls are still working after 435,000 miles. That's how long EPA requires them to meet emissions in heavy duty applications.
