Back in the day a lot of production processes were belt driven from overhead shafts and pullets. The main drive for a lot would be a stem engine in a separate building, with steam generated in an attached boiler-house. Some factories here were still using steam into the early '60's, eventually to be replaced by individual electric motors during the transition to modern machinery.
