Which one do you have? The original series (beige with push buttons on the side) had a problem with the LCD that lots of LCDs had back then -- moisture would get in and black spots would start to cover it from the edges inward. Another problem, even with newer ones, is the "zebra strip" connectors that connect the LCD's transparent conductive traces to the circuit board. They're made of alternating stripes of conductive (black) and non-conductive (white) rubber, but with age they sometimes don't make a good connection any more. If the display goes blank but you can restore it by pressing on the display or the case around the top and bottom edges of the display, that's the problem. It can sometimes be fixed by taking it apart and shining up the PCB contacts with a pencil eraser. Wouldn't hurt to clean up the zebra strips with solvent while you're in there, but don't try to do anything to the traces on the LCD glass. Of course any trace on the board can crack and cause intermittent problems. Sometimes temperature sensitivity is due to a cracked trace or cracked component solder joint. It's easy to fix, if you can find the crack. Anyway, what exactly is yours doing?
