I made mine hydraulic. The winch handle has a detent locking mechanism to hold it either engaged or not engaged. Lock it in and let the motor do the work. Use a two way valve to forward or reverse the winch. I put a lever at the front of my truck to control the valve, it's kinda nice being right there at the winch while pulling something. I also put a dual mico lock on the brakes to lock all 4 wheels and not have to worry about getting run over by the truck while winching from the front of the truck. Works great.
