3/4 inch expansion (or welch) plugs seal up the shift rail ends. Take out the plugs. One way to do this is to drill a hole in the end of each plug, then pry them out with a screw driver. The plugs are thin; not much drilling is needed before you will break through.

Once exposed and free of any attaching pieces, the rails simply slide our with gentle taps of a hammer and drift.

Small balls and springs are in the rails and case. Watch for them, and see where they are coming from.

In dismantling the tower, take your time. Take lots of notes, pictures and drawings. Label each piece that comes out and put it in a baggie. Leave nothing to memory.
