I never use a guide tool. I use the input shaft to the transmission, while it is out of the transmission, as a guide tool.

When rebuilding a trans, the input shaft has to come out anyway. When the trans is apart is the perfect time to use the shaft to align the clutch. Then, never touch the clutch pedal until the trans is back in place. Do you have an spare trans lying around so you can use its shaft and not disassembly your good one again?

I also do not use guide bolts. Just sit on the truck floor where the seat should be, with my head under the dash, legs astraddle the trans, and lift and work it in by hand - twist and turn. I keep the floor jack or trans jack about an inch below the trans so it is ready if I need to set the trans down and catch my breath and/or work out a cramp.

It may be pretty old school, but it works.
