Water is flat, snow is often on hills. The main problem he had with the screw propulsion was it slid sideways on even the slightest hill. One of the selling points of the "pontoon" system, is that the solid sides keep the vehicle from sliding downhill even on a steep grade. It will roll over before it slides (not sure that's a feature).
