Tim, good to hear you have it back on its four feet ready for your enjoyment.

I had a similar experience when I bought my 48 FFPW, and got it home knowing it would not start but cranked over.
Good spark through out, fuel in carb, truck wanted to start and fired at first cranking, then seamed to drag down on battery and starter. Tried several things, still fire first crank then became a strain on starter or dead battery feeling.
Tried to pull start it, that is when oil the viscosity of Kerosene fling out of the filler cap or vent that smelled like gas.
I drained 3.5 gallons liquid from the crank, diluted oil with gas.
Removed carb to inspect and found no needle under the float, so every time fuel pump pushed fuel raw gas entered the the carb and the cylinders, hydro-locking the engine then drain to the block and allow it to try to start till flooded again.
I rebuilt the carb and truck started up like a champ.
Tim's issue might not have been a stuck float but, Tim changed two things at the same time, it might have been a stuck float from our crappy gas we are forced to use, it is another possible source of fuel filling the crank.
