ethanol is basically alcohol and is usually made from stuff like corn and then fermented.

Alcohol does suck up moisture/water. Who knows how long the fuel sits in storage tanks until we buy it. So seeing water in stuff that sits for awhile does not surprise me. I would not doubt that there could be as much as 5% water in the fuels we buy and goes higher as it sits.

The discoloration maybe from the stuff that was fermented to make it. Kind of like the color in whiskey and beer.

The older fuel systems were not designed to hold up to ethanol - rubbers & plastics especially.
